“Someone Like You” is a song by British singer-songwriter Adele. Written by Adele and Dan Wilson for her second studio album 21, the song was inspired by a broken relationship of hers, and lyrically it speaks of Adele coming to terms with it.
The song was released as the second single from 21 on 24 January 2011. It received acclaim by music critics, following a well-received performance of the song at the 2011 BRIT Awards, making it her first number one in the UK. It has also become the longest reigning number one single of 2011 in Ireland, spending six weeks at number one. It has also topped the charts in New Zealand, Australia and has become her second number one on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] In July 2011, it became the first single of the decade to sell a million units in the UK. It was sent to US radio on 9 August 2011.[2] She is the first female British solo singer in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to have two number ones from the same album. It has gone on to sell over 1,000,000 downloads in the US alone.[3]
The song was sampled by Young Money Entertainment rapper, Tyga, on his song “Reminded”. Although Adele is credited as a featured artist, the sample was pitched up to fit the song’s tempo.[4] It was also featured during the closing of the Grey’s Anatomy episode “This is How We Do It.”[5] It was also featured during the season 4 finale of Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
